The freshman placed 2nd in his first collegiate race
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Freshman Jacob Choge was named the Conference USA Male Athlete of the Week for his stellar performance in the Commodore Classic, the conference office announced this afternoon.
In Choge's first collegiate race, the freshman finished second among some of the nation's top runners and led the Middle Tennessee men's team to a first place finish Saturday in Nashville. The Kapsabet City, Kenya native ran a personal best 24:03.7 in the 8k against top power five schools.
Choge's 24:03.7 time in the 8k is one of the best in recent Middle Tennessee history, surpassing current Blue Raider, Geoffry Cheruiyot's time of 24:06.6 in the 2014 Commodore Classic.
Associate Head Coach Keith Vroman was impressed with Choge's performance on Saturday.
"It was fun watching him compete against one of the top runners in the nation, in Edwin Kibichiy from Louisville," Vroman said. "I look forward to seeing what Jacob can do for us the rest of the year."
The team is currently ranked No. 3 in the South Region and is receiving votes for national rankings. The team looks to continue its winning streak in two weeks at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky.
