MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A battle between Conference USA's two remaining undefeated teams takes place tomorrow in Murfreesboro and features two of the top scoring trios in college basketball as Middle Tennessee hosts Marshall at the Murphy Center.
The Blue Raiders (13-3, 3-0) are coming off of a road sweep in Texas that moved them to 3-0 in league play for the first time since 2011-12. MT has been one of the most efficient teams in Division I basketball all season, ranking in the Top 20 nationally in turnovers per game (10.0), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.53) and turnover margin (+4.2).
Middle's big three – senior forward JaCorey Williams (17.4 ppg), junior guard Giddy Potts (16.1) and senior forward Reggie Upshaw (15.6) – are one of just five triple threats in the country averaging 15 or more points per outing apiece.
The Thundering Herd (11-6, 4-0) bring the sixth best scoring offense in the nation into Murfreesboro Thursday, averaging just shy of 90 points per game. However, Marshall's fast pace offense also allows opponents extra possessions as their scoring defense is the eight-worst in college basketball.
Marshall joins Middle Tennessee as one of the five Division I programs that boast three 15-point scorers. Jon Elmore (21.1), Stevie Browning (16.9) and Ryan Taylor (15.6) lead Marshall's offensive attack with Elmore leading C-USA in scoring and ranking second in assists per game (6.5).
The Herd just finished a weekend sweep at home against Old Dominion and Charlotte after opening league play with a road sweep of FIU and Florida Atlantic, but are just 2-6 on the road during the 2016-17 season.
Middle Tennessee leads the all-time series with Marshall 8-3 and took two out of three meetings last season, including a 99-90 win in the C-USA Semifinals. The Blue Raiders have never lost to The Herd in Murfreesboro and have won five of the last six contests overall dating back to a 2012 win in the opening round of the NIT.
Thursday's contest between the Raiders and Herd tips off at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on beIN Sports.
