Match Notes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis head coach Charlie Ramsay and his squad are set to start the 2017 dual match season against Lipscomb and Belmont at the Adams Tennis Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m.
"It's really exciting to have our girls back from the break. They came back with a great competitive attitude, and since we've started preseason it's been really enjoyable," Ramsay said. "This preseason we kept it simple and focused on two things: family and competition. We got closer as a team and we've competed every practice in all our drills."
The Blue Raiders will be looking to start the new season successfully and continue their winning streaks over a pair of in-state foes when they take on the Bisons and Bruins. MT has won the last 11 matchups against Lipscomb since falling in their first match in 1975. Belmont has yet to take down MT in 10 tries, including last year's season-opener.
Lipscomb hosts UAB to start their season Friday night after posting a 14-8 record last season. The Blue Raiders and Bisons had six common opponents in 2016, including WKU, Belmont, Murray State, Stetson, Samford, and Kennesaw State. Lipscomb defeated Belmont and Kennesaw State, while MT saw triumphs over all common opponents.
Head Coach Jamie Aid has been with Lipscomb for three years, posting an overall record of 37-29. Hannah Gamage, Thabile Tshatedi, Katerina Kandyba, and Hanna Victorsson return for the Bisons in 2017, to go with four newcomers.
Belmont will enter play on Sunday with one match already completed in the new season, as they face Central Arkansas Friday night. The Bruins were 3-15 in the 2016 dual match season, with wins coming against North Alabama, Cumberland and SEMO. MT earned the victory over Belmont last year by a score of 6-1 in the first match played at the Adams Tennis Complex.
Following his playing days at Belmont, head coach Mark Srouji has led the Bruins' women's tennis program for nearly 20 years. With the return of their top three winningest singles players, Maddie Gilley, Laura Van Eeckhoudt and Lindsey Whitehead, Belmont will look to improve in the 2017 dual match season.
"I expect us to compete this weekend, but I know we'll have some nerves," Ramsay added. "I hope our returners will help our newer girls, but I know they're excited, they're good tennis players, and they've been in pressure situations before."
Free T-shirts and free pizza will be given out Sunday during the Blue Raiders' doubleheader.
Live streaming of courts one and two will be available for live-streaming at CUSA.tv/RaiderVision, and live stats will be available for both matches. Follow @MT_WomensTennis on Twitter for live tweets throughout the day, and like them on Facebook, MTSU Women's Tennis.
