Lady Raider win streak snapped at WKU

Johnson leads MT with 14
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Middle Tennessee started slowly against WKU and was never able to recover on its way to a 66-51 setback at Diddle Arena Sunday afternoon.
Despite the loss ending the Lady Raiders' five-game win streak, they remain within one-half game of the top spot in C-USA. Middle Tennessee (9-7, 4-1) is one-half game behind Charlotte and WKU (13-5, 5-1) in the league standings.
"You just have to take your cap off to Western Kentucky today," Lady Raider veteran Head Coach Rick Insell said. "They did a very good job of attacking. We really did not get off to a good start, and they had a lot to do with that. When we did get into our offense, we were slow getting into it. It was just that kind of day."
Alex Johnson led three Lady Raiders in double figures with 14 points to go with her five rebounds. Ty Petty added 11 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Abbey Sissom rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points for Middle Tennessee.
Freshman Kyla Allison also had her most extensive playing time in weeks and responded with seven points and four rebounds in 23 minutes of action.
Middle Tennessee trailed 17-9 after the first quarter, but WKU used a 15-6 second quarter to open a 32-15 halftime advantage. The 17-point halftime deficit quickly stretched to 33 in the third quarter, but Middle Tennessee did respond.
The Lady Raiders put up 22 fourth-quarter points to make a comeback, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
"I'm proud of our young ladies for handing in there and playing hard in trying to come back," Insell said. "In that fourth quarter WKU really didn't have a great deal of intensity like earlier in the game, but we did battle and I'm happy about that. It is one game and we have to remember that. We just have to go back to work and get ready for the next one."
Middle Tennessee returns to action when it plays host to FIU Thursday. Tipoff at Murphy Center is 6:30 p.m.
