All 10 players score in victory
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee continued its dominance over Conference USA foe FIU Thursday, trouncing the Panthers 95-43.
The win, which was MT's largest margin of victory since taking down Louisiana by 51 on Jan. 7, 2012, and its most lopsided win ever in Conference USA play, makes the Lady Raiders 26-9 all-time against FIU. They've won nine games in a row in the series.
"I think the biggest thing was tonight we played as a team," sophomore Alex Johnson said. "We distributed the ball well and played well on the glass."
All 10 Lady Raiders played and all of them got into the scoring column, led by Johnson's 22-point effort on 7-of-9 shooting. It was a strong game for the post players as Rebecca Reuter dominated inside with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, to go with a game-high 12 rebounds. It was Reuter's third career double-double and two of them have come against FIU. Johnson and Reuter combined for 40 points on 14-of-18 shooting to go with 17 rebounds.
Sharpshooter Abbey Sissom poured in 16 points on the strength of three 3-pointers, and Jess Louro rounded out the double-figure scoring with 11 points. Ty Petty just missed a double-double with nine points and seven assists in just 29 minutes of action.
Charity Savage (6), Kyla Allison (5), Gabby Lyon (4), Katie Collier (2) and Shayla Middlebrooks (2) also got into the scoring column. Lyon also added seven rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Raiders came out of the gates dominant on both sides of the ball against a Panther team allowing 72 points per game, while scoring just 56.1.
Middle Tennessee used a 17-3 run over the end of the first and start of the second quarters to get a double-digit lead and never looked back, setting a season high in points scored and season low in points allowed.
"We talked about playing the team, not playing the scoreboard," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "They know what they're doing, they just had to step up and make a play and finish. That's what they did."
Reuter was the spark early on. After the first period she led the team with five points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in just eight minutes of work.
The Panthers seem to be one of Reuter's favorite opponents. Last season, she netted her career high of 18 points against them, and on Thursday finished with 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, her third career double-double and second of the season. She was 7-of-9 from the floor and also had three steals and three assists.
"I don't know, I guess it's just a coincidence I've played well against FIU both games," Reuter said. "I was just really trying to have a good game tonight, so I tried to bring a lot of energy."
It was the Lady Raiders' work on the defensive end that guided them. They limited FIU, which went in as the worst shooting team in C-USA at 36.6 percent, to just 32.6 percent shooting (15-46) and finished with a season-best 14 steals and tied a season high with 24 turnovers forced. Junior Gabby Lyon led the way with four takeaways.
"Coach talked to us early about bringing energy, and I think that really played into our defense," Sissom said. "I think it really just came down to our energy that helped us tonight."
Johnson, who netted her 700th career point with a basket in the third quarter, finished 7-of-9 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. Senior Ty Petty added nine points and moved into fourth all-time in assists at Middle Tennessee, finishing with seven and giving her 439 in her career.
The Lady Raiders will face C-USA's other Florida team Saturday, as Florida Atlantic travels to the Murphy Center for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
"FAU gives us more problems than any team in the conference, and they have for the last 12 years," Insell said. "The offense they run, the way they move their players in and out – it's never a given with FAU."
