MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis will be looking to carry the momentum gained from two victories in the team's first matches of the season into this weekend, when the Blue Raiders face Tennessee and Wake Forest in Knoxville.
"We focused a lot in practice on building confidence and enjoying the competition," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "We're excited for the opportunity to compete against these two established programs this weekend."
The Vols will open their dual match season against Air Force Saturday morning before taking on MT later in the day. Sadie Hammond was named to the Second Team All-SEC list a season ago and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships in singles. She'll be joined by Brittany Lindl, currently ranked No. 64 in singles by the ITA after performing well at the No. 4 and 5 spots in the lineup last season.
At No. 2 a season ago, Eve Repic posted a 6-10 mark, followed by Kim Kermet at No. 3 with a 6-8 mark. Alison Ojeda took over head coaching duties at her alma mater in November 2016 after spending 2006-2010 at the helm of the Blue Raiders.
MT will return to the courts in Knoxville Sunday afternoon for a match against a strong Wake Forest team.
"We can't settle in in doubles play," Ramsay said. "We've got to be ready to play from the first ball against these teams, and we can't be passive under pressure."
While they've yet to reach the ITA top-25 this season, Wake Forest head coach Jeff Wyshner has put together five consecutive top-25 recruiting classes in just seven years with the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest returns every member of their main starting six from 2016, including the No. 33-ranked singles player, Kimmy Guerin, and the No. 61-ranked singles player, Emma Davis. Joanna Zalewski earned 30 total singles victories last season, including fall action, along with a 20-3 record at No. 4.
"We're definitely going there to win, but these matches serve as an opportunity to learn from ourselves, as well as our opponents," Ramsay added. "We'll be learning from their professionalism and how they compete. Those two programs are where we want to be."
