"It is quite an honor to be named National Player of the Week because there are some really outstanding players across the country, and Ty Petty is one of them," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "Ty has been great for us all season, and she was again last week when we really needed her. I've often said she's one of the best point guards in the country and she is proving that with a great senior year."
Petty averaged 25 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists to lead Middle Tennessee to wins against Central Michigan and UAB last week. The senior point guard also joined the 1,000-point club at Middle Tennessee in a 29-point performance against UAB. The 29 points tied her career high.
"I am appreciative of this great honor and to the committee for voting for me," Petty said. "It means a lot to be recognized in such a way, but this award should really go to our team because we played great basketball as a team to earn those two wins last week."
Petty's heroics helped Middle Tennessee overcome a 14-point deficit to earn a conference road win in its league opener at UAB. She scored 15 of her 29 in the first half and completed the comeback with 10 in the fourth quarter. Petty was 10-of-10 from the free-throw line against UAB, and 17-of-17 from the stripe for the week. Petty also had a season-high five steals against UAB, which was one off of her career high.
Earlier in the week, she poured in 21 points, dished out four assists and collected two steals in Middle Tennessee's 79-69 win against Central Michigan.
Petty is ranked first nationally in minutes played (39.4), 11th in free-throw percentage (.915), 51st for assists (5.1) and 72nd for 3-point field goal percentage (.400). The dynamic standout also is ranked in the Top 10 of seven statistical categories in C-USA.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
