TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – For the third meet of the 2017 season, the No. 22 Middle Tennessee men's cross country team finished first. The squad bested the deep field at the Crimson Classic hosted by Alabama. The men were led by Jacob Choge's first place overall finish. The women's team finished 17th at the event.
Choge beat out the over 250 other runners on his way to a personal-best 23:22.3 in the 8k event. He finished more than four seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Vincent Kiprop from Alabama.
Kigen Chemadi came in seventh with a time 24:06.7 while Sampson Laari finished in the top 20 with a time of 24:55.7.
Julia Jelagat was the top MT finisher on the women's side. She came in 44th with a time of 21:45.2 in the 6k event. Agnes Abu and Rachel Kigen both finished in the top 75 in the 280 athlete field.
QUOTABLE
"The men ran really well today against the tough field," said Associate Head Coach Keith Vroman. "We knew this meet was going to tough racing against Power Five opponents but the guys came out and took care of business. Choge really pulled it out down the stretch to beat the Alabama guys and we are proud of his performance today. The women ran well today as well. We rested Sharon (Kibiwott) but our other usual top four ran really well. Gladys and Julia really showed up today with Gladys probably running her best race so far this season. So I am really pleased with the results today as we head into the conference championships."
