MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee senior Maria Josefina Zehnder advanced four rounds in the Main Draw Singles bracket at the Adams Tennis Complex in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional this weekend.
The Blue Raiders wrapped up their weekend with a total singles record of 15-11 and a doubles mark of 3-3, including consolation results. Kim Kermet also earned a pair of wins in the Main Draw Singles tournament before dropping her third round match on Friday. Costanza Magazzini claimed a first round win in Main Draw Singles.
"Zehnder was unbelievable this weekend," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "She's got all the talent, but what she's struggled with in the past was consistency and toughness. She showed both of those in a big way this weekend, and I couldn't be more proud of her."
Zehnder took down the 16 and 17 seeds in the singles tournament before falling to three-seeded Emma Kurtz of Vanderbilt. Kermet's second round win came over a seeded opponent in Indiana's Madison Appel before a third round loss to 10 seed Mariana Humberg from Louisville.
"Kim had a nice win over a quality opponent in Indiana, and she battled with a really tough player from Louisville," Ramsay added. "Kim has gotten a lot better, and she's on the right track."
Luisa Zirilli, Marta Peris Herrero, Lidia Burrows, and Magazzini were all 2-2 in singles in the ITA Regional.
In doubles action, Kermet and Zehnder took down opponents from Belmont in the first round of the Main Draw Doubles bracket before dropping a heartbreaker to two-seeded Vanderbilt in the second round, 8-7 (3). MT's other doubles combos dropped close first round matches to Chattanooga in Main Draw Doubles.
"We're just not good enough in doubles right now," Ramsay said. "Doubles is going to have to be something that we can rely on in the spring, and we've got to improve."
The singles and doubles championship matches of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional will be played Monday morning at the Adams Tennis Complex.
The Blue Raiders will take a week off competition before the TCU Fall Invitational on Oct. 27-29.
