MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Despite Peyton DePriest notching her 11th and 12th goals of the year, the Middle Tennessee soccer team fell to visiting Louisiana Tech 3-2 on Thursday night. The Blue Raiders move to 7-8, 4-4 on the season while LA Tech improves to 11-2-5, 4-1-3.
DePriest connected early to give MT a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. After the goalkeeper severely misplayed the ball, DePriest was able to easily slot it into the back of the net.
The lead was short lived as the Lady Techsters' Nomvula Kgoale equalized in the 14th minute on a free kick chance from about 30 yards out.
It was DePriest again in the 40th minute that gave the Blue Raiders the lead for the second time in the match. Amber Hoot sent a ball from the left side and through heavy defense to DePriest who was able to get off a shot that slid past the goalkeeper.
LA Tech stifled the Blue Raider offense in the second half and in the 68th and 71st minutes took a 3-2 lead. Jenna Dages equalized for the Lady Techsters before Kgoale connected on another free kick that ended up being the game winner.
QUOTABLE
"I think we did well but obviously we didn't do well enough since they scored three and we only scored two. I think in general we created enough opportunities that the result of the game should have been better for us." – Head Coach Aston Rhoden on the team's offensive attack tonight
"First, we just have to stop giving up silly fouls around the box that leads to free kicks. This was one of the things coming into this game that we knew LA Tech was going to be strong at, set pieces and free kicks. Credit to them, they got about four of them and scored two but so we just have to make sure we are more focused and more disciplined around the box to not give up silly fouls." – Head Coach Aston Rhoden on LA Tech's free kick goals
"I think her confidence and the confidence that the team has in her has helped her success and because of that her teammates are better able to put her in the positions that she has to score. Peyton takes those opportunities really well." – Head Coach Aston Rhoden on DePriest's 11th and 12th goals of the year
"I think Andie is extremely inspirational for anyone who meets her. I think this was one of the biggest disappointments as a team because the girls really wanted to send her off with this game as a win." – Head Coach Aston Rhoden on honorary captain Andie Owen
NOTABLE
- DePriest now leads Conference USA in goals with 12 and is currently seventh in MT's individual season record book for goals
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Blue Raiders will return to the Dean A. Hayes Stadium one final time on Sunday, Oct. 22 for senior day. MT will honor Kerri Cook, Cameron Cox and Sally Gill ahead of a 2 p.m. match against Southern Miss.
