Begin play Monday
VERO BEACH, FL – After a short break, the Middle Tennessee men's golf team will be back in action Monday and Tuesday at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate. The event will take place at the Quail Valley Golf Club which is a par 72, 7,350-yard course.
The Blue Raiders finished sixth in last year's tournament with a 12-under par 852 total. Sophomore Ilari Saulo won the event last year and is the defending champion but will not be making the trip because he could not get out of qualifying. Another statement about the depth of this year's team.
The 15-team field will include Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Louisville, Maryland, host McNeese State, Memphis, Michigan State, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, South Florida, and Southern Miss.
"I am excited to get back on the road and test ourselves against a very solid field," said Head Coach Brennan Webb. "We have done some really good work since The Intercollegiate at The Grove and I really like where our team is right now. We have had an intense qualifier over the last week and the guys who earned their won on the plane had to play very well to do so.
"I think the more competition we can provide at home the better off we are going to be when we get to tournaments. I have been saying all year that we are a very deep team and that good players are going to be left at home at times and we certainly have had that happen a couple times this year. That's a good place for a program to be and I am very proud of the work the guys have all put in for us to be in this postion."
After a Sunday practice round, the Blue Raiders will begin play Monday morning with 36 holes and then play the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Teams will shotgun start each day beginning at 8 AM ET.
The Blue Raiders, ranked No. 51 nationally, will go with a lineup of James Beckner, Marcus Byrd, Tyler Johnson, Tanner Owens, and Chip Thomas.
Byrd leads the team with a 70.7 stroke average and has two top five finishes while Johnson owns a 71.9 average and tied for 13th in the team's last outing. Beckner and Thomas have even par 72.0 averages as Beckner tied for 20th and Thomas 31st at the Intercollegiate at The Grove. Owens is coming off a strong performance as well with a tie for 13th at The Grove that included a final round 1-under par 71.
