KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tom Moonen rebounded from dropping his first round match in Main Draw Singles on Thursday to rack up six wins and claim the consolation bracket of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional this weekend.
"Tom was able to come back and play some great tennis to win the consolation bracket this weekend," MT assistant coach Sebastian Rey said. "His confidence grew with each match, and it was good for Tom to get a lot of matches under his belt."
The Blue Raiders had a total singles record of 19-11 and a doubles mark of 2-3 over the four-day event.
Miguel Negre Fernandez and Luis Morillo Diaz also went far in the consolation singles draw in Knoxville. Jan Porteset, Chris Edge and Max Rauch saw their main draw singles weekends come to a close in the Round of 64.
Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore entered the tournament ranked as the No. 18 player in the Ohio Valley Region, and he advanced to the Round of 32 before falling to the 12-ranked Robert Herrera of ETSU. Gian Issa also advanced to the Round of 32 by knocking off 26-seeded George Harwell of Vanderbilt in the second round.
"Gian played a great match against Vanderbilt," Rey added. "After being down a set, he responded positively and never let his head go down. That's been a credit to his effort so far this fall."
As for doubles at the Ohio Valley Regional, the Blue Raiders fielded three teams, including the 5-seeded combo of Morell and Moonen, who were ranked No. 60 by the ITA in the preseason.
Morell and Moonen dropped their first round match to a pair from Louisville in a tiebreak, but MT's remaining doubles teams advanced to the Round of 32. Negre and Rauch won over Butler but fell to Kentucky in the second round, 8-6. Edge paired with Porteset for an 8-0 win in the first round over Austin Peay, but the duo dropped their match against a team from Vanderbilt that was seeded 16th, 8-7.
Only the Tribe Invitational remains for the Blue Raiders in the fall season, which kicks off November 3 in Williamsburg, Virginia.
