Among national leaders in scoring in 2016-17
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee junior standout Alex Johnson has been named to the C-USA Preseason All-Conference team as announced by the league office Wednesday.
Johnson is one of eight players on the preseason team, and she is Middle Tennessee's only representative. Johnson was a first-team All C-USA selection as a sophomore after being named the C-USA Freshman of the Year in 2016.
The C-USA Preseason Player of the Year will be announced Thursday, and the league's preseason coaches' poll will be released Friday ahead of next Monday's C-USA Media Day Event in Dallas.
"Anytime you have a player to get recognized by coaches in the league it is special," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "It's not easy to be named to the preseason team because there are only eight spots and we have 14 teams with some excellent players. AJ deserves this recognition. She works hard and has proven to be one of our conference's top performers over the last two seasons."
Johnson was second in C-USA and 17th nationally in scoring with 20.2 points per game in 2016-17 on her way to joining the exclusive 1,000-point club at Middle Tennessee. Johnson finished the season with 1,086 career points, making her the highest scoring four-year player after two seasons in the program. Her 687 points as a sophomore were fifth on the single-season scoring list at Middle Tennessee.
Johnson scored double figures in 32 of the 34 games played and netted 20-plus points in 15 contests.
