Game One Box Score
Andy Rivera and Drew Huff led the way for Team White in a tightly contested 2-1 victory Thursday.
Huff went 2-for-3 at the plate, recording Team White's only two hits off opposing pitcher Jake Wyrick. Huff's first hit, a double down the right-field line, came in his first at-bat in the bottom of the first. Two batters later, Manuel Lopez scored him on a sacrifice-fly to right field.
Team Blue quickly answered in the third inning when Kevin Sullivan reached on a one-out single, then advanced to third on a throwing error. He was then brought home by Austin Dennis on a choppy ground ball hit to the third baseman.
However, Team White immediately battled back in the bottom of the same inning. Their first batter, LA Woodard reached base safely on a hard hit ball to the third baseman and followed it up with a stolen base on the very next pitch. Woodard would eventually score the game-winning run on a wild pitch two batters later.
For Rivera, he finished the day with six innings pitched, only surrendering four hits and zero earned runs in his winning effort.
"I was just going out there and attacking the zone," Rivera said. "I wasn't trying to do too much and I wanted to trust my defense."
Team White's defense made several highlight plays throughout the game. Lopez robbed Jake Hagenow of a would-be home run, Darien Prewett made a diving play to save a double and Aaron Antonini threw out Kevin Sullivan trying to steal second.
For Team Blue, Wyrick also had a dominant outing on the mound, throwing five innings and only surrendering one earned run on two hits and eight strikeouts. He even had a stretch of 17 consecutive batters faced without giving up a hit.
Head coach Jim McGuire was quite pleased with all of his pitchers today.
"You want two of your better guys to go out and compete against each other," McGuire said, "Wyrick is a high strikeout guy … I thought he dominated just about every hitter that he faced.
"Rivera was moving the ball in and out and we played pretty good defensively behind him, both of them were effective with everything they were trying to do."
Electric pitching from both bullpens closed out the game. Huff came in the seventh inning for relief for Team White, getting the save for his only inning pitched, striking out two-of-three batters faced. On the opposite side, Grant Williams came in the sixth, also throwing an unblemished inning of relief.
Both teams look to bounce back tomorrow for game two of the series. Ryan Scharf gets the start for Team Blue and freshman Peyton Wigginton looks to continue momentum for Team White. First pitch is set for 3 p.m at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
