MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Team Blue plated four runs in the first inning on the way to their 7-1 victory on a chilly Saturday at Reese Smith Jr. Field. The win marks their first in the 2017 Blue-White World Series, they now trail two games to one.
Team Blue jumped on opposing freshman pitcher Zach Keenan early. Myles Christian got things started when he tripled down the right field line on the game's first pitch. He finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs.
"Down two games to nothing, we came out here with a lot of intensity and said we couldn't lose this game," Christian said, "I told myself I had to be a spark plug for the team; I came to the park ready to hit."
Christian was brought in by Kevin Sullivan who reached on an infield error. Sullivan finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBIs. That followed with a base hit from Austin Dennis, a walk by Kevin Dupree and two balks, which gave Team Blue a lead that proved to be insurmountable.
With plenty of run support by the time he took the mound Carson Lester was dominant for Team Blue, only allowing three hits and one earned run in five innings of work. He also struck out three batters in his first appearance in the series.
Timely hitting in the third, fourth and sixth inning scored three more insurance runs for Lester, who got in a bit of a pickle in the bottom of the fourth.
Lester got Drew Huff to ground out for the inning's first out, but allowed the bases loaded off an error, a base hit and a walk. However, he escaped the inning only allowing one run after he struck out Brett Stratinsky and got Brycen Thomas to ground out.
Phil Kunsa came in the sixth inning in relief of Lester, throwing a hitless inning. Kunsa also finished the day 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Andy Wright wrapped things up on the mound for Team Blue, allowing no runs on one hit in his only inning of work.
Both teams look to seize momentum of the series Tuesday in game four of the series at Reese Smith Jr. Field at 3:00 p.m. Starting pitchers for each team are Grant Williams (Team Blue) and Carter Bari (Team White).
Each pitcher has thrown in relief during the series. Neither has allowed an earned run.
