Post players dominate in victory
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee started strong and coasted to an 89-34 win against Tennessee Wesleyan in an exhibition game at Murphy Center Sunday afternoon.
Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell was pleased with how the team started and played into the second half; however, he would have liked to seen his team finish better against the Bulldogs.
"Overall, there were some good things, but we also have a lot to work on and improve upon," Insell said. "We started pretty good, but we didn't maintain that throughout the second half. This is what the exhibition games are for though, to get a chance to play and see what we need to work on before the next (exhibition game) Thursday."
Three Lady Raiders reached double figures, led by Alex Johnson's 15 points. Rebecca Reuter tallied 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and Jess Louro finished with 12 points, three steals and three rebounds in a solid all-around game.
Gabby Lyon was a stat-sheet stuffer with nine points, five rebounds and four steals. Jordan Majors also finished with nine points in her first action since season-ending knee surgery last December. Newcomer LaSonja Edwards made her presence felt with eight points, four rebounds and three blocks. Anna Jones (six points), Jadona Davis (five points) and Abbey Sissom (5) points also had solid all-around games.
Middle Tennessee's post players combined to score 59 points on 61 percent shooting from the field (23-of-38), 23 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
The Lady Raiders shot 65 percent as a team in the opening quarter as they established a 30-12 advantage and never looked back. They led 48-18 at the half and didn't let up defensively in the third quarter when the Lady Raiders held Tennessee Wesleyan to just one field goal on 1-of-14 shooting.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it faces Trevecca in exhibition action at Murphy Center Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
