Sydney Navarro scores first career goal
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In what turned out to be a torrential downpour, the Middle Tennessee soccer team fell in overtime to Marshall, 2-1. The Blue Raiders move to 6-6, 3-2 on the year following the match.
The Thundering Herd got out to a quick start as Jordan Sackaris scored just three minutes into the game. She followed up a shot hit off the crossbar to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.
Over the next 60 minutes of action, the Raiders outshot the Herd 11-3. Amber Hoot had two of those shots that both hit off the post while Peyton DePriest had one that was cleared by a defender off the goal line.
The Raiders were able to equalize in the 69th minute on Sydney Navarro's first career score. She volleyed in a corner kick from Taylor Hatch to make it 1-1.
Sydney Chalcraft made a diving save in the 87th minute to keep the game tied until the end of regulation.
In overtime, Marshall was able to hold possession in the rain and secure the 2-1 win in the 98th minute from Sackaris again.
QUOTABLE
"Today we didn't have the rub of the green. We had a lot of balls that were cleared off the line or hit posts. Credit to Marshall for staying in the game and they kept fighting until they got the goal at the end." – Head Coach Aston Rhoden's thoughts on the game and unlucky breaks up front against Marshall
"We just have to get back to the same things that got us the games that we want. I think we did that tonight despite the conditions. Now it's just a matter of putting this one behind us and looking at some film, doing what we need to do and getting the job done in Texas." – Head Coach Aston Rhoden on preparing next weekend's games against Rice and UTEP.
NOTABLE
Middle will travel to play Rice on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. and then play at UTEP on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
