Zirilli claims bracket championship at FSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Middle Tennessee's Luisa Zirilli won three matches in singles play to claim her bracket's championship at the Florida State All-Conference Showdown to conclude the fall season.
The four Blue Raiders combined for a 9-3 record in singles play and posted a 3-2 mark in doubles.
Zirilli opened the weekend in singles with a three-set win over an opponent from Wisconsin and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over West Virginia's Kristen White. In the championship match, Zirilli's opponent from Wisconsin retired three games into the match, giving the Blue Raider the championship in her bracket.
Marta Peris Herrero also competed in the championship match in her singles bracket on Sunday but fell short in two sets to Florida State's Lucie Prochazkova. The Spaniard had wins over UCF and West Virginia in straight sets prior to being named the runner-up in her bracket.
In addition to two Blue Raiders competing for the championship on Sunday, the other two members of MT's squad was one win away from being in championship matches of their own. Kim Kermet wrapped up a 2-1 singles weekend with wins over FSU and Troy, and Lidia Burrows was also 2-1 on the weekend with a consolation win against ETSU in addition to a first round victory over Wisconsin.
In doubles action, both Blue Raider teams earned first round victories, including Kermet and Zirilli's 8-6 win over Iowa. Both squads lost to opponents from FSU in the second round to end their contention for a doubles championship. Kermet and Zirilli won again in consolation play to wrap up the fall season in doubles, 8-7 (6).
After a short break from competition, the first dual match action of the season is slated for Jan. 14 starting at 11 a.m. as the Blue Raiders take on Belmont and Austin Peay at the Adams Tennis Complex.
