Senior forward top choice of fans
Every week, NCAA.com's Starting Five recognizes some of the top women's basketball players in the country based on their performances, and Middle Tennessee senior forward Gabby Lyon made the list this week.
Lyon earned a spot on the first weekly honor of the season by virtue of becoming the Fans' Choice in online Twitter voting Tuesday. Lyon captured almost 50 percent of the votes to beat out Jordin Canada, UCLA; Crystal Dangerfield, UConn; and A'ja Wilson, South Carolina.
"This really comes as quite a surprise to me," Lyon said. "I appreciate our fans and everyone who took the time to vote for me on Twitter."

Lyon, the 2017 Conference USA Sixth Player of the Year, delivered in a big way as the Lady Raiders won at Vanderbilt in the season opener Friday. After C-USA Preseason Player of the Year Alex Johnson exited the game with an ankle injury five minutes into the game, Lyon stepped up to record her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, along with two steals and one blocked shot to help lead the win against a SEC foe on the road.
Lyon did her best work with the game on the line in the fourth quarter. After Vanderbilt had rallied to cut a Middle Tennessee 14-point lead to six with under four minutes remaining, Lyon scored the Lady Raiders' next five points to preserve the lead – and the win.
In addition to Lyon, this week's NCAA.com Starting Five includes Taeler Deer, Texas State; Asia Durr, Louisville; Megan Gustafson, Iowa; and Sabrina Ionescu, Oregon.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it plays host to Lipscomb Sunday at 2 p.m.
