Four Blue Raiders to play in the Tribe Invitational
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary is the final event of the fall 2017 season for Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team, and the Blue Raiders will take four team members to the event.
"The guys are ready to go this weekend, and we're looking forward to a different fall event," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "We used our week off to rejuvenate and make a few minor adjustments as we head into the winter break."
Last year's team captain Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore will take a 5-4 singles record to Williamsburg this weekend along with a 4-3 mark in doubles. The junior is coming off two wins at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, advancing to the Round of 32. He is 4-1 in singles against opponents from nationally ranked teams.
Morell's doubles partner from a year ago, Tom Moonen, will also make the trip to the Tribe Invitational. Moonen is 7-4 in singles after five wins at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional to claim the consolation singles title. He is 3-4 in doubles action this fall, with a 1-1 record against opponents from nationally ranked teams.
Two of Middle Tennessee's three seniors will travel to William & Mary, including Miguel Negre Fernandez. Negre is 5-4 on the season in singles, with two of his wins coming in the third set. In the most recent event, he notched two wins at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, with one of those wins coming against George Hedley from No. 34 Louisville.
Jan Porteset will round out the list of Blue Raiders competing in the Tribe Invitational. The senior transfer has competed in three events so far this fall, posting a singles record of 6-2. He began his career at MT with four consecutive victories, which included a sweep of the Penn Invitational to open the fall.
"Our goal for this weekend is to get a little bit better and get some more matches under our belts before we head into the spring season," Borendame added.
