MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee had its final tune up of the preseason Thursday before kicking off its regular season at Vanderbilt on Nov. 10.
The Lady Raiders welcomed in-state foe Trevecca to the Murphy Center and took down the Division II Nashville school 88-41.
"We didn't have the right mindset in the first half," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said, "but I thought our rotations were much better in the second half. I wasn't happy at halftime with them, but I was happy after the game.
"We'll get an oil check next Friday night against Vanderbilt. We're kind of excited to see where that takes us."
It wasn't a great start for MT. The score was tied at seven just over five minutes into the contest, and then an 11-5 Lady Trojan run in the second quarter brought the score to 28-20 four minutes ahead of halftime.
But, that's when the Lady Raiders showed their dominance.
A 7-1 run to close out the second quarter carried into the third, when Middle Tennessee outscored Trevecca 22-10 to widen the lead to 59-31 heading to the final frame.
The Lady Raiders closed things out in the last 10 minutes to carry two exhibition wins into their first regular-season contest. They also took down Tennessee Wesleyan, 89-34, on Oct. 29.
While they looked impressive at times in the two exhibitions, Insell has plenty he wants to see improved before making the trip to Vandy, most notably in the turnover department.
While MT forced the Lady Trojans into 33 turnovers, 19 of which were steals, the Raiders had 21 giveaways of their own, 16 coming in the first half.
"At halftime [Insell] chewed us out and told us what we needed to fix," junior Alex Johnson said. "We just have to go out and be crisp with everything. When we have defenses on us, sometimes our guards and posts get distraught and speed it up. We just have to slow it down, play our game and stay crisp."
Johnson, the Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year, led the way for the Lady Raiders. The junior had 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and she also added an 8-for-10 night at the free-throw line.
Junior LaSonja Edwards, a Gulf Coast State College transfer, had 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while senior Abbey Sissom added 11 points and three steals and junior Jess Louro rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10. Senior Gabby Lyon had nine points and a team-high six steals.
