MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee avenged their first loss of the season against Belmont by beating Tennessee State on Saturday. The Blue Raiders aim to keep their momentum going in the "Cinderella Showdown" when Florida Gulf Coast comes to town Tuesday, November 21.
This will be the first regular season match-up for the Blue Raiders against a 2017 NCAA Tournament team. Both the Blue Raiders and Eagles have each made the NCAA Tournament three times in the previous five years.
"I sure hope our fans appreciate this opportunity because Florida Gulf Coast has created a national brand in basketball since their Sweet 16 run," said head coach Kermit Davis. "I think it's a great time with kids out of school for Thanksgiving … hopefully our students will come out for what I think is going to be a great college basketball game."
It is also the first head-to-head game between the two schools in program history. However, they will play again in Fort Myers, Florida on December 2.
Seniors Brandon Walters (14 points & seven rebounds) and Nick King (20 points & five rebounds) led the way for the Blue Raiders against Tennessee State. This season, the frontcourt duo has averaged a combined 34.6 points per game on 60 percent shooting from the field. King was also named Conference USA Player of the Week Monday following his performances against Murray State, Belmont and Tennessee State.
On the other side, Florida Gulf Coast gets the majority of their scoring contributions from their backcourt. Through three games, the Eagles' starting guards, Brandon Goodwin (18 ppg) and Zach Johnson (16), are both shooting 16-of-42 from the field.
Senior starter Christian Terrell is also providing major scoring contributions for the Eagles, averaging 15.7 points per game. He is shooting at a 70 percent clip from the field and 62.5 percent from behind the arc.
The Blue Raiders and Eagles are scheduled to tip at 6:30 p.m. inside Murphy Center. Tickets are on sale at GoBlueRaiders.com/tickets. The game will also be streamed by Stadium on Facebook.
