Louro leads way with 19
OXFORD, Miss. – Middle Tennessee's strong start was not enough to derail Ole Miss as the host team claimed a 65-56 triumph in front of 1,112 at The Pavillion.
The game marked the fourth time Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell and his son, Ole Miss Head Coach Matt Insell, had led their squads against one another. After Rick Insell's squad had won the first three meetings, Ole Miss finally provided Matt Insell with a win against his father Wednesday.
Middle Tennessee started fast and jumped out to 17-5 lead after the first quarter, and it led 26-17 at the half; however, Ole Miss turned the tide in the third quarter.
"Ole Miss has a good team. I think it is Matt's best team at Ole Miss," Rick Insell said. "We just didn't get the collective play we needed from our guards to win the game. We knew we had to have good guard play and handle their pressure to get the win. It was a good, competitive game. We just have to continue to work and improve from here."
Ole Miss erased Middle Tennessee's early lead with a 29-point third quarter to take a 46-37 lead into the final quarter. The Lady Raiders rallied to cut the lead to four late in the fourth quarter, but they couldn't complete the comeback.
Jess Louro had a strong effort to lead the Lady Raiders with a career-high 19 points. The junior guard also pulled eight rebounds. Alex Johnson continued to return to form from her ankle injury with 13 points in 20 minutes of action. It was her most extensive minutes of the season.
Senior guard Abbey Sissom rounded out three players in double figures with 10 points. Rebecca Reuter added nine points and added five rebounds. Gabby Lyon added 10 rebounds for Middle Tennessee, which outrebounded Ole Miss, 38-32.
Middle Tennessee will continue its current three-game road swing when it plays at Georgia Tech Sunday.
