Barnard, Hall, Lewis join program
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee head men's golf coach Brennan Webb announced today that three highly ranked in-state student-athletes have signed scholarship agreements with the Blue Raiders.
The Blue Raiders are adding Beech High School standout Michael Barnard, Halls High Schools Jake Hall and Hendersonville High School product Bryce Lewis. All three golfers are highly ranked nationally and among the best in Tennessee.
"I am very excited to announce the signing of three of the best junior golfers in the country," said Webb. "Having three players ranked inside the Top 50 in the country should make this recruiting class one of the best in the country to sign today. Thanks to the tireless efforts of The Tennessee Golf Foundation and The Tennessee Golf Association, and the opportunities they give the junior golfers in the state, from beginners all the way up to the Sneds Tour, the caliber of junior golfers in our state is as good as any in the country. Our number one priority in recruiting is to get the very best players in the state and I am very excited that these young men saw the vision we have for the program and chose to stay in state and compete here at Middle Tennessee. This is a great day for our program and sets us up to continue to strive to be one of the best programs in the country."
Barnard, out of Hendersonville, Tenn., is ranked 39th nationally by the Junior Golf Scoreboard. He finished second at the 2017 TSSAA State Championship, tied for third at the Tennessee Junior AM and was third at the 2017 Under Armour/Scott Stallings Championship. Barnard also placed fifth at the 2017 Junior PGA Championship and earned MVP honors for Team East at the Tennessee Junior Cup.
"Michael is a fantastic athlete and a very natural player," said Webb. "He really came into his own this past summer having a lot of success on a national stage. He is very even keeled and calm on the golf course and shows a lot of maturity for a junior golfer. Coupled with his physical gifts this will serve him well in college and I think he has the potential to succeed at the highest levels."
Hall, from Knoxville, Tenn., owns a No. 48 ranking by Junior Golf Scoreboard and was a member of the 2017 State Championship team. The medalist at the 2017 TSSAA State Tournament, Hall tied for fifth at the AJGA City of London Junior Championship, was third at the TGA Boys Junior Amateur and was seventh at The Wally. Hall, the course record holder at Beavorbrook GC with a round of 60, tied for 11th at both the Under Armour/Scott Stallings Championship and the Calloway Golf Junior Classic.
"Jake is very gifted physically," said Webb. "He generates a lot of club head speed and has a great golf swing. I have seen him hit some shots that not a lot of junior golfers are capable of. He has a game that is ready to play college golf right now and I think the sky is the limit for him once he gets in the college setting. He makes a lot of birdies and is not scared of the spotlight."
Lewis, also from Hendersonville, Tenn., is ranked 25th by the Junior Golf Scoreboard. Lewis' junior golf highlight happened this past summer when he qualified for the USGA Amateur Championship at Riveria CC. He was one of the youngest competing in the field.
The 2016 Tennessean Schooldays Champion, Lewis also won the 2017 Under Armour/Scott Stallings Championship by setting the tournament scoring record and won the Tennessee Junior PGA Championship. Lewis' grandfather, Dan Lewis, was a member of Middle Tennessee's 1965 National Championship team.
"Bryce is one of the most polished junior golfers I have ever recruited," said Webb. "He comes from a golf family with both his mom and dad having played college golf and his grandfather having played here at MTSU. You can tell watching him that he grew up around the game. His golf IQ is very impressive for a junior golfer and he has the physical skill set to match."
