MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Senior forward Nick King has been named the Conference USA Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday following his exemplary performances against Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.
King, a Memphis, Tenn. native, posted game highs in scoring for both matchups last week (23 at Vanderbilt, 25 vs Ole Miss) on a combined 45 percent shooting from the floor and 85 percent from the free throw line. He also averaged six rebounds and 2.5 assists per game compared to just two total turnovers.
Against Ole Miss, King got off to a slow start, posting just two points and three rebounds which contributed to the Blue Raiders one point deficit at halftime.
However, King exploded for 23 in the second half on 10-of-16 shooting, including a personal 7-0 run to put MT up by 11 with 2:33 remaining in the game before they eventually won by 19.
Currently, he ranks second in Conference USA and is tied for fourth in the country in scoring (24.3 points per game) while shooting 56/37/85 percent on the floor. The senior forward is also averaging 6.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
"Nick had a fantastic week against two high-level opponents," said head coach Kermit Davis. "I'm sure if you ask him, he will credit his teammates, but he was a direct impact on us getting two SEC wins."
King has led the Blue Raiders in scoring in every game this season, including seven consecutive outings of 20+ points per game. No other player in the Kermit Davis era at Middle Tennessee had ever logged more than four straight of such a scoring output.
King performances also earned him College Sports Madness C-USA Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors after the Blue Raiders ran their SEC winning streak to five games.
King aims to continue his momentum this week as the Blue Raiders travel to Birmingham to face Auburn on Saturday in the Birmingham Jam before they travel to Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic over Christmas Break.
