Sissom's 22 leads the way
EDINBURG, Texas – Abbey Sissom turned in season highs for points (22), field goals (7) and 3-pointers (5) but it wasn't enough as Middle Tennessee dropped a 72-57 decision against USC in the UTRGV Holiday Classic here Tuesday.
Middle Tennessee (6-5) found itself in a big hole early but battled back and took a 22-20 lead on Sissom's 3-pointer in the second quarter. The Lady Raiders continued to battle and found themselves in within reach of victory at the half, trailing 34-27 at the break.
USC (9-1) proved to be too tough in the second half as it pulled ahead and maintained an edge throughout the second half.
"I thought we gave much better effort here today, but we continued to hurt ourselves with our mistakes," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell. "We had too many mistakes and turnovers to beat a very good USC team; however, I did see some positives that we need to build upon."
Sissom narrowly missed her career high of 25 with one of her stronger performances of the season. She was 7-of-13 from the field, and 5-for-9 from 3-point range.
Another positive was the strong play of freshman Jadona Davis, who came off of the bench with a career-high nine points. Jess Louro added 11 points and five rebounds. Freshman Anna Jones also had one of her best games with four points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Lady Raiders will face Canisius Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
