MT turns back Canisius 55-45
EDINBURG, Texas – Abbey Sissom poured in a career-high 28 points and Jess Louro supplied her first career double double as Middle Tennessee turned back Canisius, 55-45, in the UTRGV Holiday Classic here Wednesday.
The Lady Raiders (7-5) had a battle on their hands from the outset and showed tremendous resolve to earn the hard-fought win. Toughness aspects such as rebounding and defense exhibited the Lady Raiders' strength as they pulled 44 rebounds and held their fifth opponent of the season to under 50 points.
"I'm really proud of our basketball team," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We have been on a long trip with three games in four days and to see these young ladies battle like they did at the end of it was tremendous. We played with a lot of guts and determination – we played Lady Raider basketball."
Guards Sissom and Louro were instrumental in victory. Not only were Sissom's 28 points a career-best, but she also had a career-high nine field goals and was 5-of-11 from 3-point range. Sissom also dished out four assists in her 40 minutes of action.
Louro was also stellar. Her first career double double included 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Louro also swiped three steals. Rebecca Reuter was solid with eight points and seven rebounds, while Gabby Lyon tallied six points and 10 rebounds – her third double-figure rebounding effort of the season.
It was a battle throughout.
Canisius had pulled to within one in the third quarter, but Sissom scored 10 straight points and 12 of the team's 14 during a 5:05 stretch to push the lead to seven; however, Canisius fought back to make it a one-possession game in the final stanza.
Sissom stepped up once again, scoring eight of the team's 10 points in the final 2:38, including six straight to ice the win. Lyon was also key in the decisive fourth quarter with all of her six points coming in the frame.
Middle Tennessee will take off for the Christmas break and return to action when it faces Kentucky at home, Dec. 28.
