HONOLULU, Hawaii – After two days of practice in Honolulu, Middle Tennessee men's basketball opens up play in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic tomorrow with its first ever meeting against Princeton in the tournament's opening game.
The Blue Raiders (7-2) are coming off of a neutral site loss to Auburn, but had reeled off five straight prior to the slip-up against the Tigers and have been an impressive 15-4 on neutral sites since the beginning of the 2015-16 season. That record includes a perfect 6-0 record in regular season tournament play with championships at the 2015 Great Alaskan Shootout and 2016 Challenge in Music City.
Princeton (5-6) started slow this season but have won three straight against Monmouth, Cal Poly, and fellow Diamond Head participant USC. Leading scorer Devin Cannady totaled 23 points and nine rebounds in the overtime win at USC while Myles Stephens poured in 30 and added nine boards of his own.
Four-year veteran Giddy Potts led the Raiders against Auburn with 19 points, but it was a 3-point clinic by Edward Simpson and Antwain Johnson that nearly led to a big comeback win as the pair combined for six triples in the final 12 minutes.
Grad transfer Nick King continues to lead Middle Tennessee offensively averaging 22.9 points per game, good for 12th best in the nation.
The Blue Raiders and Princeton Tigers tip at the Stan Sheriff Center at 4:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU. With a win the Blue Raiders will play again Saturday on ESPN2 at 3:30 p.m. CT while a loss will put them in a 6:00 p.m. CT on ESPN3 against either Akron or USC.
