MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After returning from a long trip to Hawaii just three days ago, Middle Tennessee men's basketball is back on the road Saturday to open Conference USA play against fellow league frontrunner UAB at Bartow Arena.
The Blue Raiders (8-4) and Blazers (9-4) were picked first and second, respectively, in the 2017-18 Conference USA preseason poll and both stood near the top of the standings throughout non-conference play.
Middle Tennessee recently went 1-2 against a trio of 2017 NCAA Tournament teams in the Diamond Head Classic, defeating Princeton on a game winner by Giddy Potts before falling to Power 5 foes USC and No. 15 Miami by only a combined eight points.
UAB's last contest came against Mississippi Valley State and the Blazers rolled to a 74-57 win despite resting leading scorer Chris Cokley. Averaging 17.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, Cokley figures to be an early contender for Conference USA Player of the Year honors but is joined by a fellow Player of the Year candidate wearing blue and white in Nick King.
King's 23.3 points per outing rank ninth nationally and leads all players in Conference USA. The highly-talented lefty also averages seven rebounds per game and is shooting 52.8 percent from the field, 40.6 percent from three and 80.8 percent from the free throw line.
After averaging 24.7 points and eight rebounds in Honolulu, King was named Conference USA Player of the Week for the third time this season and TSWA Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Middle Tennessee and UAB are meeting for the 16th time with the Blazers leading the series 10-5. MT won both meetings last year, including a 66-64 victory on a JaCorey William game winner at Bartow Arena in February that clinched the Raiders' first outright regular season title in Conference USA.
Tomorrow's contest will tip at 4:06 p.m. CT and will be streamed by Stadium on Facebook.
