Blankenship, Ferguson on All-Freshman team
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The 2017 All-Conference USA football teams and honorable mentions were announced by the conference office Tuesday, and two Middle Tennessee sophomores were placed on the second team while two more freshmen were named to the all-freshman team. Eight players were named honorable mention.
Sophomore wide receiver Ty Lee and redshirt sophomore linebacker Khalil Brooks were both placed on the all-conference second team, while freshmen defenders Reed Blankenship and Jordan Ferguson were named all-freshman.
Lee, who had a stellar freshman season that saw him land on the FWAA Freshman All-American team in 2016, was the Blue Raiders' most consistent receiver all season with team highs in catches (74), receiving yards (916) and receiving touchdowns (five). His receptions also led the conference, while his receiving yards were second.
The 5-foot-9, 163-pound Moultrie, Georgia, native was also named an All-C-USA Honorable Mention last season and was on the C-USA Freshman Team.
Brooks enjoyed a breakout sophomore season for Middle Tennessee. After ranking 11th on the team with just 38 tackles and one assisted sack in 2016, he finished this year's regular season with team highs in tackles for loss (15) and sacks (6.5) and was third with 68 tackles. He was third in the conference in tackles for loss and tied for sixth in sacks.
The 200-pound linebacker from Atlanta, Georgia, was also named C-USA's Defensive Player of the Week twice this season.
Blankenship made the first start of his career in the Blue Raiders' Week 2 contest at Syracuse and responded in a big way, making a key late interception. It was his first of two picks on the season, which led the team, and he also ranked second for MT with seven tackles for loss and fourth in tackles with 63. He was also named All-C-USA Honorable Mention.
Ferguson, who made his first career start in Middle Tennessee's eighth game against UTEP, finished the season strong with a career-high six tackles and three tackles for loss against Old Dominion. He ended his freshman campaign with 24 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and an interception.
Under head coach Rick Stockstill, the Blue Raiders have now produced 36 first-team honors and 29 second-teamers.
This year's All-C-USA Honorable Mentions for MT are QB Brent Stockstill, OL Robert Behanan, OL Chandler Brewer, DL Walter Brady, LB D.J. Sanders, DB Reed Blankenship, DB Jovante Moffatt and K Canon Rooker.
