The MT senior was 3-0 in singles in November
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After posting a 3-0 record in singles, including a victory over a ranked opponent, Middle Tennessee's Miguel Negre Fernandez was named Men's Tennis Athlete of the Month by Conference USA on Tuesday.
The Palma de Mallorca, Spain, native earned all three singles wins at the Tribe Invitational, hosted by William & Mary on Nov. 3-5. He also had a 3-1 doubles mark in November.
Negre began the event with a comeback win over Lars de Boer of William & Mary by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 and followed that up the next day with a quick victory over Richmond's James Aronson, 6-1, 6-1.
On the final day of competition, Negre took on Andy Zhou of Harvard, who was ranked as the No. 99 singles player in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Negre jumped out to an early lead in the match and won by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
This award is Negre's first Athlete of the Month award, and an MT player has now claimed the title of Athlete of the Month for November two consecutive years, as Jacob Pugh earned the award last season.
"Miguel has stepped up his game and has figured out how important his fitness is to his style," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "Miguel has primed himself and the team for a huge spring season."
Negre and the Blue Raiders open the spring 2018 season at the Adams Tennis Complex on Jan. 15 against Austin Peay and Chattanooga.
