MT to start spring season Jan. 15
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team posted an overall singles record of 77-38 and was 30-21 in doubles action this fall in seven events, but the Blue Raiders are eyeing their next opportunity to get on the court.
Jan Porteset and Chris Edge were added to a team that returned all eight players from a year ago, and the pair of newcomers made a statement in their first fall as Blue Raiders. Porteset's MT career got off to a fast start, as the senior transfer won six of his first seven matches. Edge, the squad's only freshman, won eight of his first nine singles matches and enjoyed a clean sweep in singles and doubles play in his first college tournament, the Penn Invitational.
"They both [Porteset and Edge] mixed in well with our team," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "Jan already being part of a college tennis team made it easier for him, but they both jumped in during that first tournament."
Gian Issa led the Blue Raiders in singles victories with a record of 10-2. The senior swept the Dale Short Shootout and the Dick LaLance Showdown and made it to the Round of 32 at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional. Edge and Miguel Negre Fernandez led the team in doubles wins for the fall season with eight triumphs. Negre was rewarded for his stellar play in November by being named Conference USA's Athlete of the Month on Dec. 5.
Luis Morillo Diaz had a six-match win streak that included a run at the championship of the ITA All-American when he made it to the third round. Morillo was tied for second on the team in singles wins with a record of 9-4, including a 4-0 mark in matches that went to a third set. Tom Moonen was also tied for second in singles wins by posting a 9-5 record.
"Tom's emerged and was voted as a captain as a sophomore, and we've already got the leadership of our three seniors, which all plan on being an impact in the lineup this spring. Then you've got Gonzalo, who was the captain last year and is a leader on the court," Borendame said of his team's leadership.
The team's leadership will be called upon to deliver throughout MT's challenging spring 2018 schedule. Home matches at the Adams Tennis Complex include showdowns with Wisconsin (Feb. 25), the C-USA Pod (March 16-18), and William & Mary (April 8).
The Blue Raiders start the season at the ATC on Jan. 15 against Austin Peay and Chattanooga.
