Three Road Matches Ahead for Women’s Tennis

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis begins a nine-match road swing Friday at 2 p.m. against Illinois, followed by two matches in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Sunday.
The Fighting Illini enter play on Friday afternoon with a record of 1-4, falling to Alabama, Washington, No. 6 Georgia and No. 14 Auburn, while taking down Georgia State by a score of 4-2. Senior Madie Baillon took a singles win at No. 4 against Auburn for the only Illinois team point. Baillon has climbed up to No. 97 in the ITA singles rankings.
The upperclassman-filled team places Louise Kwong at the top of the lineup, where she's 0-4 so far this season, followed by fellow senior Alexis Casati at No. 2, with a record of 1-3 in dual match singles. The Fighting Illini have four seniors total to go with two juniors and three sophomores.
The Blue Raiders and Illini have met only once, when Illinois took an 8-1 win in 1999. Head coach Evan Clark is currently in his second season leading the Illini.
On Sunday, the Blue Raiders will face Sam Houston in in Tulsa for their second neutral site match of the season. The Bearkats opened up the season with 7-0 wins over Prairie View A&M and Dallas Baptist before falling to ULM, Louisiana Tech and SMU. Sunday's match will be the first meeting between the two programs.
The Bearkats are led at the top of the singles lineup by Fabienne Gettwart, a junior, who's posted a 2-3 mark up to this point in the season. Khee Yen Wee, Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic all have 2-3 records in dual match singles at this point in the season at the No. 3, 4 and 5 positions, respectively. Sophomore Ema Barkovic sits a 3-2 at the No. 2 spot in the lineup for Sam Houston.
MT will stay in Tulsa on Sunday to face a tough Golden Hurricane team at 2 p.m. The Hurricane has suffered only two losses, with both coming at the hands of nationally ranked opponents.
Tulsa received votes in the latest ITA team rankings, and they're led by Ksenia Laskutova at the No. 1 spot in the lineup with a record of 3-3. The Hurricane is undefeated at the No. 2 singles spot, with Mahitha Dadireddy and Rongrong Leenabanchong both posting 3-0 marks. Marcelina Cichon has an impressive 6-1 record in singles to this point and has played at every spot in the lineup except No. 1 and 2.
