DES MOINES, Iowa — Tom Moonen and Luis Morillo Diaz claimed singles victories on Sunday, but Middle Tennessee men's tennis suffered a setback at Drake in the first of ten consecutive road matches.
The Blue Raiders took an early lead in the match behind doubles triumphs at No. 2 and 3. Nicolas Buitrago Machado and Max Rauch evened up the doubles at one match apiece by winning 6-3 at the two spot, followed by a point-clinching win at No. 3 by Gian Issa and Miguel Negre Fernandez.
Drake's Tom Hands remained singles in the 2017 dual match season with a straight set win over Rauch at No. 5 to even the overall team score up at one point apiece before Moonen won over Calum MacGeoch at No. 2 by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
The Bulldogs reeled off three consecutive straight-set victories to clinch the overall win over the Blue Raiders. Morillo finished the match at No. 4 in a third set tiebreak, winning 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (13-11).
MT will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, next weekend to face the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Oregon Ducks. Blue Raider fans can catch the team in action at the Adams Tennis Complex on March 31 for the MT Shootout against South Alabama, as well as the Conference USA Championship, April 21-23.
