Netters Take Down Sam Houston in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis opened the three-match weekend by falling to Illinois, but bounced back to win over Sam Houston in Tulsa on Sunday morning.
The Fighting Illini jumped out to a 3-0 lead by winning the doubles point and No. 2 and 6 singles matches. Lidia Burrows put the Blue Raiders on the board by winning in straight sets at No. 3, and Maria Josefina Zehnder, Luisa Zirilli and Marta Peris Herrero all saw their matches go to third sets. However, the Illini won the remaining matches to make the final score 6-1.
Against Sam Houston on Sunday morning, the Blue Raiders maintained their undefeated record when winning the doubles point. Holly Horsfall and Zirilli earned a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot, followed by a 6-1 win by Costanza Magazzini and Burrows at No. 3.
The Blue Raiders won five singles matches against the Bearkats, including senior Sarah Sediri, who took a 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 6 spot to make the final score 6-1, in favor of the Blue Raiders.
MT finished the weekend with a matchup against Tulsa, who received votes in the latest ITA rankings. The Golden Hurricane earned the doubles point despite Magazzini and Burrows shutting out their opponents at No. 3.
Burrows carried that momentum into her match at No. 3 singles, as she took the 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) win, while Magazzini pushed her match to a third set at No. 2 before falling in the match-tiebreak. The Hurricane won in straight sets at all other singles spots.
Next weekend, the Blue Raiders travel to Florida to take on a pair of Conference USA foes, including Florida Atlantic on Friday at 10 a.m. and FIU on Saturday at 1 p.m.
