Blue Raiders turn focus to C-USA Championships

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – With the regular season in the books, Middle Tennessee's indoor track and field teams head to the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. with their eyes set on the Conference USA Championships.
This weekend's meet gets under way Saturday at 9 a.m. with combined events, before concluding Sunday evening on the track.
The C-USA meet will feature six Blue Raider athletes or relay squads that finished the regular season with a first-place ranking in the league.
Kicking off the weekend, Atsu Nyamadi and Qetuwrah Abdullah-Muhammad will compete in the Heptathlon and Pentathlon, respectively, in the combined events.
In the field, MT's Jacob Patten ranks first in the league in the high jump with a 7'0.25" (2.14m) mark he set in the first meet of the season at Vanderbilt.
On the track, Blue Raider Solomon Afful has enjoyed early success in his first semester at MT. The junior college transfer ranks first in the 200-meter run with a time of 21.03 and seeks to improve his fifth-place mark of 6.76 in the 60-meter dash.
In the 800-meter run, reigning C-USA Male Track Athlete of the Week Eliud Rutto will showcase his speed. The senior leader set a new school record and personal best with a time of 1:46.70, while teammate Sampson Laari finished with a 1:48.41 mark at the Iowa State Classic a week ago. Rutto's time also ranks No. 6 in the nation.
On the women's side, classmates Abike Egbeniyi and Agnes Abu sit Nos. 1 and 2 in the league in the 800-meter run with times of 2:04.47 and 2:04.72, respectively. Those marks also rank Nos. 13 and 14, respectively, in the NCAA.
