MT at FAU and FIU Match Notes
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis faces a steep challenge this weekend going on the road to face a pair of Conference USA opponents, including a showdown with Florida Atlantic Friday morning, followed by a match against FIU Saturday afternoon.
The Owls enter the weekend with a 3-2 record, with wins coming against Stetson, Bethune Cookman and Florida A&M, while losing to San Jose State and Florida Gulf Coast, in their last time on the courts. Head coach Marcy Hora-Cava is in her ninth year in Boca Raton, and her squad is led by freshman Laura Fabrizi, who is 3-2 at the top spot in the singles lineup.
Senior Lyndsey Boos posted a record of 4-1 so far this season, with three wins coming at the No. 3 spot. Florida Atlantic specializes in doubles, as the No. 1 and 3 doubles combos for the Owls are both perfect up to this point in the season.
The Blue Raiders will travel to Miami after their match against the Owls to face FIU on Saturday.
Due to their stellar play in the regular season a year ago, having the highest national ranking in C-USA, the Panthers secured the one seed heading into the C-USA Championships at the Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro. FIU took down the Blue Raiders in the quarterfinal round on their way to falling to two-seeded Rice in the championship match.
Panthers head coach Katarina Petrovic is currently in her fifth season, and she's put together another impressive team, whose lineup has been top heavy at times this season. Andrea Lazaro and Maryna Veksler have been dominant at the top two spots in the FIU lineup this season, both posting a 4-0 record entering the weekend.
While Lazaro is ranked No. 29 in singles by the ITA, the Panthers are well-rounded due to their solid doubles play. FIU is 3-1 at the No. 1 and 2 doubles spots, which are anchored by Lazaro and Veksler.
