Blue Raiders Clip Eagles in Extra Innings, 6-5

Jarreau hit the GW RBI-Single in the 10th
In his first career start as a Blue Raider, JUCO transfer Ryan Kemp led off the 10th inning with a single through the left side. After a failed bunt attempt, senior Brad Jarreau stepped up to the plate. During his at-bat, Kemp stole second base, which proved to be the difference in the game. Pitches later, Jarreau hit the game-winning single to left, scoring Kemp from second to put the Blue Raiders up 6-5.
"It was huge that Kemp was able to steal second," said Head Coach Jim Mcguire. "Brad was talking in the dugout about how he was waiting to get a pitch up. He got a pitch up and handled it and drove it to left field, he had a big night."
The Blue Raiders are no stranger to playing extra baseball, in 2016 MT was 5-0 in extra innings. Two of those wins coming in last year's opening series against Indiana.
Clutch hitting was key in the Blue Raiders victory, as every MT batter in the lineup had a hit. Jarreau finished 3-for-6 with a run and RBI. Sophomore Drew Huff went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI of his own.
Timely defensive plays were a major factor in the Blue Raiders win. In the bottom of the ninth, with two on and no one out, senior Riley Delgado made a fantastic catch at short, and threw over to second for the double play. Redshirt freshman Devin Conn, struck out the next batter, to keep the game knotted at 5-5.
Again in the eighth, the Eagles were threatening with two men on and one out. Redshirt freshman Devin Conn got the popup to second, Kemp threw over to first to get the double play and third out of the inning.
"Those two double plays were huge for us, we stress that we want to be the best defensive team that we can be and that was really the difference in the game," stated McGuire.
The Blue Raiders got the 2017 scoring, going early with Huff plating Jarreau for the first score of the season in the top of the first. Middle Tennessee was up 2-0 after the top of the third, as sophomore Austin Dennis brought home Delgado on a RBI-groundout.
Georgia Southern battled back with a run apiece in the third and fourth innings.
With the score tied 2-2 heading the fifth, the Blue Raiders came up with a two-out rally. Dennis reached on an error, followed by a Blake Benefield walk. Huff followed it up with an RBI-single, scoring Dennis. Aucker crushed a two-RBI double to left center to put MT back on top 5-2.
After redshirting last year and undergoing Tommy John Surgery, Conn (1-0) picked up the win in his first-ever appearance as a Blue Raider going 3-2/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Georgia Southern's Landon Hughes (0-1) was tabbed with the loss. Another first-year Blue Raider, Tyler Holcombe (1), came up big picking up the save, after closing it out in the 10th.
Game two of the three-game series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. Tyler Hasper will get the start on the mound for MT.
