MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Gian Issa earned a win for Middle Tennessee men's tennis against Minnesota on Friday, but the Blue Raiders fell to the Golden Gophers and to the Oregon Ducks in two matches over the weekend.
Issa teamed up with Miguel Negre Fernandez at No. 3 doubles to win, 6-4, over the Golden Gophers to begin the weekend, but Minnesota won at No. 1 and 2 doubles to earn the first point in the match.
Minnesota's Matic Spec entered the weekend with a national singles ranking of No. 51, along with teammate Stefan Milicevic, who was ranked No. 113. Spec and Milcevic took straight set wins at No. 1 and 3, respectively, to add to Minnesota's team points. The Golden Gophers also earned wins at No. 2, 4 and 5 before Issa won his second set en route to a victory in a match-tiebreak.
Against Oregon in Minneapolis on Saturday afternoon, the Blue Raiders fell at No. 2 and 3 doubles, while Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Tom Moonen were unable to finish their match at No. 1, which was locked at 4-all.
In singles against the Ducks, the Blue Raiders fell at No. 1, 4 and 6 in straight sets, allowing Oregon to clinch the 4-0 victory. Issa was one game away from forcing a third set in his match at No. 5 singles.
MT will be back in action in Atlanta on Feb. 26 against Georgia State before returning to the Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro on March 31 for the MT Shootout. Murfreesboro and the ATC will also be home to the 2017 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship on April 21-23.
