Softball Suffers Setback in Second Day of Lion Classic II

HAMMOND, La. – The Middle Tennessee softball team returned to the diamond for more of the Lion Classic II on Saturday, Feb. 18. The Blue Raiders fell in both contests, first to UT Arlington, 0-1, and in the second game to Southeastern Louisiana, 5-6. MT is now 5-3 on the year.
Game One
The Blue Raiders and the Mavericks held one another scoreless through five innings of action despite MT getting a base runner in each of those five innings.
In the first and second inning, the Blue Raiders were able to get a runner to third but were unable to get her the last 60 feet to score.
The Mavs recorded back-to-back hits in the fifth and with no outs was threatening to take a lead. However, Cori Jennings struck out the next two batters, her only strikeouts of the game, to keep MT alive in the game.
In the sixth, UTA broke the scoreless tie. The Mavs reached on an infield single and scored on another infield single a few batters later.
The Raiders challenged in the top of the seventh as Morgan Harris had a leadoff infield single. She moved her way around the base path to scoring position but was unable to cross home plate as the Mavs won 1-0.
Jennings moves to 3-2 on the year, striking out two and walking one in six innings. Harris went 2-for-3 in the defeat.
Game Two
Middle Tennessee had a quick turnaround, playing Southeastern Louisiana immediately after. This time, the Raiders got the bats out to a hot start. Keely McGee and Kirstyn Cuccia started the game with back-to-back doubles that each reached the fence in right field. Then, MT scored two more runs in the inning on a drop third strike and an illegal pitch.
In the top of the third the Blue Raiders added another run. Summer Burgess reached on dropped pop fly ball behind third base and moved to third on a fielder's choice. She scored on a wild pitch.
The Lions get one back in the bottom of the fourth. A walk, stolen base, error and another stolen base put the score at 4-1 in favor of MT.
In the fifth, the Lions struck again. A leadoff single to left and another single past a diving Burgess at short put runners on the corners. Southeastern was able to get a run across with some tricky base running to make it 4-2.
The Raiders added an extra insurance run in the top of the seventh. Lauren Payne led things off with an infield single. Burgess followed with a walk and then Austyn Whaley sent a hard hit ball down the left field line for a stand-up RBI double.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Lions didn't quit. Southeastern found themselves with the bases loaded following a walk, an error and an infield single. The Lions got one across the plate on a walk and then followed with a ball that took a funny hop at second base to tie the game. The Lions hit a sacrifice fly to bring the winning run across the plate to take the game, 6-5.
The Blue Raiders look to end the Lion Classic II on a high note tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 20 as Middle plays Alcorn State in a 9am contest.
