Netters Pick Up Three Singles Wins on Weekend

MIAMI – Middle Tennessee women's tennis ended a two-match Florida trip Saturday afternoon against FIU after falling by a narrow margin at Florida Atlantic on Friday.
Costanza Magazzini and Lidia Burrows won their match at No. 2 doubles against Florida Atlantic, but the Owls won at No. 1 and 3 doubles to clinch the first point of the weekend.
In singles against the Owls, Luisa Zirilli was dominant in her match at the No. 5 spot, being the first to finish in singles with a score of 6-3, 6-0. Later in the match, Magazzini brought the overall team score to 3-2 after winning in three sets at the No. 2 spot.
After Florida Atlantic won in three sets at the top spot in the lineup to clinch the match, Marta Peris Herrero earned a three set win, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (3), to make the final team score 4-3.
FIU got off to a quick start in their match Saturday afternoon by winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Andrea Lazaro entered the match with a national ranking of No. 29 in singles play, and she protected home court at the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-3 win. The Panthers won two more singles matches to clinch the win over the Blue Raiders.
Zirilli pushed her match at No. 5 to a third set before the Panthers finished off that match, making the final team score 7-0.
The Blue Raiders will continue their road swing next weekend with a match against Chattanooga on Feb. 26.
