MT Battled But Fell Short 8-5 Sunday
The Blue Raiders found themselves down 3-0 through three innings when Devin Conn started the MT rally in the fourth with his first career hit, a leadoff single. Sophomore Austin Dennis followed up Conn with a single of his own through the left side. Aaron Aucker launched a double to left field, scoring Conn and Dennis.
Later in the inning, senior Kaleb King lifted a RBI-single over the shortstop, knotting the game at 3 apiece. Kevin Sullivan put the Blue Raiders in the lead with his first hit of the season, raking one through the right side for an RBI-single to put MT up 4-3.
The Eagles had an answer, tying the game in the next frame. MT responded in the fifth with a Dennis double to left, followed by an Aucker RBI-single plating Dennis, and just like that the Blue Raiders were back on top.
A four run seventh inning, gave the Eagles the 8-5 lead, as they held on from there.
In spite of the loss, in his first career start in a Blue Raider uniform, Conn provided a huge spark for MT. The redshirt freshman finished 2-for-5 with a run, along with a key play in the third inning throwing out Michael McHorter after he hit a would be double off the wall in right. Conn was the winning pitcher in the Blue Raiders 6-5 win Friday night.
Aucker finished 2-of-4 with three RBI and a run, the junior hit .364 in the series. Dennis also had a solid game hitting 2-for-4 with two runs, the Rockledge, Fla., native is batting .385 through first three games of the season.
Freshman Grant Williams (0-1) picked up the loss in first appearance as a Blue Raider. Eric Goldstein (1-0) earns the win for the Eagles.
Head Coach Jim McGuire has a positive outlook on the season, despite the loss.
"I felt like we were with right there the whole series and obviously I thought we should've won the series last night, but we came up a little bit short," McGuire stated. " I feel good where we are, I definitely would've felt better if we had won the series, but if we can get our bullpen solidified, with the way we play defensively I think we have an opportunity to be pretty good this year."
The Blue Raiders are on the road again Tuesday to face Lipscomb at 4 p.m. Radio coverage will be provided on 92. 3 FM (WMOT 2), along with an audio broadcast available online at CUSA.tv/RaiderVision.
