MT excels in day one at C-USA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — With day one in the books, Middle Tennessee turned in a successful start to the C-USA Championships. The men's team stands in second place with 31 points, while the women sit at No. 5 with 17 total points.
While MT awaits the finals in select track events, the Blue Raiders excelled in distance.
On the track, freshman Jacob Choge claimed the men's 5000-meter run, clocking a time of 14:13.60. Teammate Kigen Chemadi finished second for an additional eight points with a time of 14:14.90.
The distance medley relay team of Geoffry Cheruiyot, Trevon Sanders, Nathan Mack and Hillary Rono took second place with a time of 10:03.59.
In the multi-events, Atsu Nyamadi finished the day in second place with 3150 points. The senior's best event came in the shot put, with a mark of 47'05.25" (14.46m) to gain ground in the standings.
On the women's side, Janet Amponsah was the leading time in the 200 meter preliminaries with a mark of 23.78. The senior also finished fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.52 to earn a spot in Sunday's finals.
Agnes Abu claimed the top spot in the 800-meter event with a time of 2:13.89. Teammate Abike Egbeniyi clocked a 2:16.18 time in the same event to earn a trip to Sunday's finals.
In the pentathlon, Qetuwrah Abdullah-Muhammad finished the day with 3773 points, good for third place.
In all, 11 Blue Raiders earned spots in Sunday's championship finals:
MEN: Solomon Afful (60 meter, 200 meter), Sampson Laari (800 meter, mile run), Eliud Rutto (800 meter, mile run), Hillary Rono (800 meter), Kigen Chemadi (mile run) and Geoffry Cheruiyot (mile run).
WOMEN: Janet Amponsah (60 meter, 200 meter), Abike Egbeniyi (400 meter, 800 meter), Loveth Odia (400 meter), Agnes Abu (800 meter, mile run) and Jessica Howell (60 meter hurdles).
