MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Blue Raiders open their home slate this weekend in the 2017 Mule Mix Classic against Northwestern, Bowling Green, and Missouri State beginning Friday at 3 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Northwestern- Series: First-ever meeting.
The Wildcats are coming off a tough 2016 campaign, finishing 15-39 overall and 7-17 in Big Ten play. The road in 2017 has not been kind to the Wildcats either, as they were swept by Arizona State last weekend in Phoenix. However, the team is returning eight of their nine starters in the lineup from a year ago and nine of their 13 pitchers. Pitching is NU's strongest asset, with their starting rotation combining for a 2.45 ERA against a tough Arizona State team. In the lineup, Joe Hoschiet leads the team with three hits. Northwestern will start right hander Joe Schindler on the mound Friday.
Bowling Green- Series: Falcons lead 2-1.
The first and only meeting between MT and BGSU came in February of 2007, where the Falcons won both games Saturday and Sunday after dropping the Friday opener 11-4. In 2016 Bowling Green struggled, finishing 17-37 overall and 7-16 in the MAC. The Falcons have great upside, with 25 of their 34 letterwinners from a year ago are returning in 2017. Junior infielder Randy Righter, leads Bowling Green with five hits in three games. BGSU was swept by #20 Texas A&M in College Station last weekend. The Falcons will start right-handed pitcher Brad Croy on the bump Saturday.
Missouri State- Series: Bears lead 23-9.
The Blue Raiders and Bears have a long history, dating back to their first meeting back in 1994. Their most recent meeting ended in a three-game Blue Raider sweep back in 2009. Missouri State is off to a strong 3-1 start, after finishing last season with a 38-21 record. Jeremy Eierman is leading the Bears lineup with eight hits, two homers, and a .941 slugging percentage through the first four games. MSU's pitching staff is also strong, combining for a team 1.29 ERA. The Bears will start RHP Dylan Coleman Sunday.
The Blue Raiders look to end their three-game skid beginning with their game Friday. MT will keep the same starting rotation from a week ago, with southpaw Jake Wyrick getting the Friday afternoon nod.
Junior Tyler Hasper looks to repeat last week's performance on the mound Saturday afternoon against Bowling Green. Hasper threw six scoreless innings and 11 strikeouts last Saturday against Georgia Southern.
Sophomore Carson Lester looks to bounce back from his three inning outing last Sunday. He will get the start Sunday against a strong Missouri State squad.
Senior Kaleb King and sophomore Austin Dennis will anchor the Blue Raider lineup, as both have hits in all four games this season. King leads the team with seven hits, while sporting a .412 batting average. Dennis leads the team with three doubles, nine total bases, and a .529 slugging percentage on the year.
Friday is $1 day at the park, with all tickets, hot dogs, and drinks priced at $1.
All home games will be video streamed through CUSA.TV/RaiderVision. Radio coverage on 92.3 FM (WMOT 2), along with Live Stats provided on GoBlueRaiders.com
