MOBILE, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee softball team opened play in the South Alabama Invitational on Friday, Feb. 24 with a 3-0 loss to Stephen F. Austin. The Blue Raiders move to 6-4 on the year following the contest.
Cori Jennings threw seven complete innings striking out four, three of which came in the first inning of play.
The Ladyjacks scored the first run in the top of the second. A walk, followed by a bunt single put runners on the corners. An error by MT in the infield allowed the run to cross home plate.
SFA scored two more in the top of the sixth. The Ladyjacks had leadoff back-to-back singles down the third base line and an error on a bunt loaded the bases with one out. SFA then hit a single up the middle to score one run and an overthrown ball from Morgan Harris down to third base gave the Jacks a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders had their best chance to get some runs in the bottom of the second. Following a walk, a single up the middle by Harris and a hit by pitch, MT had the bases loaded. Samantha Vacko hit it hard to center field but it was caught to end the inning.
Jennings took the loss in the circle, moving to 3-3. Harris, Vacko, Precious Birdsong and Summer Burgess recorded the four Raider hits. Kirstyn Cuccia was walked twice in the game, bringing her season total to 10.
Middle Tennessee returns for the second day of the South Alabama Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 25. The Raiders face off with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 9am and South Alabama at 2pm.
