MT suffered its first loss of the weekend against Missouri State
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.— The Blue Raiders suffered a setback Sunday afternoon, falling to Missouri State 5-0 in the final game of the Mule Mix Classic at Reese Smith Jr. Field.
Middle Tennessee (3-4) kept it close throughout the entire game, down 2-0 heading into the eighth, before Missouri State (6-1) tacked on three insurance runs to close out the contest.
MT struggled to find its bats Sunday, after amassing 31 runs in the first two games of the Mule Mix Classic. Aaron Aucker and Chaz Vesser picked up the lone MT hits in the game.
Missouri State starting pitcher Dylan Coleman (1-0) was solid on the mound and picked up the win for the Bears. Blue Raider starter Carson Lester (0-1) picked up his first loss in his career, throwing four innings, while allowing two runs and striking out two.
Reid Clements came in for Middle Tennessee, and threw 3-2/3 solid innings, allowing a run while fanning five.
Despite the loss, four Blue Raider starters are batting over .350 this season.
Defense has been a consistent strong suite for the Blue Raiders through seven games. The Blue Raiders only gave up one error in the Mule Mix Classic, which was a throwing error on a stolen base attempt Friday night.
"Defense has got to be our thing, we're banged up on the mound, and even a little bit banged up positionally," said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "But defensively no matter who we put out there, we're going to put a good nine out there that are going to play well on defense."
The Blue Raiders are back on the road Tuesday to take on Austin Peay at 3 p.m. in Clarksville.
All games will be audio streamed through CUSA.tv/RaiderVision. Radio coverage provided on 92. 3 FM (WMOT 2).
