MOBILE, Ala. – The Middle Tennessee softball team defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 2-1, to end the weekend at the South Alabama Invitational. The Blue Raiders went 2-2 at the tournament with Precious Birdsong being named to the all-tournament team.
The Islanders started the game by getting the bases loaded following three straight hits. With no outs, the Raiders were able to pull a double play. Kristin Uselton fielded the ball at third and sent it to the catcher, Morgan Harris. Harris then threw the ball down the line to Lexi Cushing at first for the out there.
Middle didn't allow a run in the inning as Samantha Vacko caught the next ball, a pop up, just behind first base.
The Raiders were able to also get the bases loaded in their half of the first inning. Summer Burgess led off with a single to left and Birdsong followed by reaching first on an infield single to short. Then, Austyn Whaley reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases. MT was gifted a walk on Keely McGee's at bat to push a run across.
In the top of the sixth the Islanders tied the game. TAMUCC hit a leadoff single to shallow right field and followed with another single, this time to shallow left center. A double down the third base line allowed the Islanders to make it 1-1.
The Raiders stopped the rally by turning another double play. Uselton tossed it across the diamond to Cushing at first who rocketed the ball back to Harris at home to get the runner sliding into the plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, Middle took back the lead. Birdsong singled to left center and then stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. Whaley then smacked a single past the shortstop to give MT the 2-1 win.
Birdsong batted .500 at the South Alabama Invitational, going 6-for-12 and scoring two runs. She had a team-leading .538 on base percentage and stole six bases while starting all four games in centerfield.
