CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Middle Tennessee sophomore Jenna Burris fired four birdies and finished the day with an eagle on the Par 5 18th hole to land in a tie for seventh after 18 holes at the Hurricane Invitational.
The Manchester, Tenn., native fired three of her birdies in the first seven holes before her lone misfire of the day led to a double bogey on the 10th hole.
Burris held her ground through the 17th hole before a perfect drive let her reach the fringe in two. From there she was able to sink a 15-foot putt to finish the day with a 1-under 71 and climb into the Top 10.
"Jenna played very good golf today minus one bad shot that cost her the double bogey on 10," Head Coach Chris Adams said.
Despite her strong day, the Blue Raiders sit in 13th in the field of 15 teams. MT is, however, two strokes ahead of a Top 50 team in No. 49 East Carolina.
Senior Samantha Gotcher carded four birdies of her own on the day but finished 4-over (76) and tied for 47th in the field 86.
Sophomore Hanley Long and junior Cynthia Bounleutay each shot 6-over (78) on day one while freshman Katherine Holmes finished the day at 8-over (80).
"We made a lot of mistakes today and weren't able to capitalize when we had chances to," Adams added. "The wind was tricky and swirly at times, but we have to be a little smarter and leave ourselves some better opportunities on some misses.
"The good news is we have two more days to make up some shots and move back up the leaderboard."
Holmes will lead things off on day two, going off the 10th tee at 7:10 a.m. CT. MT will be playing alongside East Carolina and South Dakota State in the second round.
