MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee returned to action at the Adams Tennis Complex on Saturday, falling to WKU but bouncing back to win over UT-Martin.
Costanza Magazzini and Lidia Burrows opened the day with a dominant 6-1 victory over their opponents from WKU at No. 3 doubles, but the Hilltoppers won at No. 2 and eked out a 6-4 win at No. 1 to earn the first point in the match.
"We have a lot of inexperience with our new girls," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "The doubles point is huge. It's 25 percent of the match, so we have to improve."
Though the Blue Raiders fought hard in singles against their rivals, WKU won in straight sets at No. 2, 4, 5 and 6. Maria Josefina Zehnder was leading in her match at the top spot in the lineup, 7-5, 3-2, when play was suspended. Burrows took her match to a third set at No. 3 but was unable to finish her match.
Against UT-Martin, MT got off to a quick start in the match after winning two close matches at No. 1 and 3 doubles.
In singles, Burrows, Marta Peris Herrero and Magazzini all dominated their matches to clinch the team victory for the Blue Raiders. Holly Horsfall came back to win her match in a match-tiebreak after falling in the first set to make the final team score 5-2.
"Lidia has done a really good job. She competes and we know what we're going to get out of her when we send her out," Ramsay added. "We're asking a lot of her as a freshman playing high in the singles lineup and now as a staple in the doubles lineup. She'll continue to get a lot better."
The Blue Raiders will begin a nine-match road swing Feb. 10 before returning to the Adams Tennis Complex on March 24.
