The Blue Raiders extend their winning streak to four games
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Blue Raiders jumped out early and earned another road win, defeating Indiana 5-3, behind Jake Wyrick's career-high 11 strikeouts at Bart Kaufman Field Friday afternoon.
MT (8-6) extended its winning streak to four games and handed IU (4-7-1) its first home opener loss since Bart Kaufman Field opened in 2013. The Hoosiers were 4-0 in previous openers.
"It's a good feeling right now to win four in a row," said Head Coach Jim McGuire. "Especially the last three on the road, and then again today against a quality opponent, it was a big day for us."
Wyrick (3-0) was locked in from the start, striking out five Indiana batters in the first two innings. The southpaw continued fanning batters left and right picking up a career-high 11 strikeouts in the seventh and final inning that he pitched.
Wyrick's previous career-high was nine strikeouts against Lipscomb last season. His performance marks the second time a Blue Raider pitcher has thrown 11 strikeouts this season, when Tyler Hasper did it opening weekend against Georgia Southern.
The Cleveland, Tenn., native threw seven innings, while allowing four hits, two runs in the fourth, and walking only one batter.
"Wyrick had tremendous composure," stated McGuire. "We got out to an early 1-0 lead and he went out and really competed. He had it going today."
Tyler Holcombe picked up his fourth save of the year, allowing one run in the ninth. Holcombe came into the weekend ranking 20th in the nation with three saves.
MT jumped on the scoreboard early again, capitalizing on an Indiana error in the first inning. Delgado lifted the ball to right field the first play of the game, when the outfielder dropped the ball, allowing Delgado to advance to 2nd. After a groundout advancing Delgado to third, Austin Dennis picked up his 14th RBI of the year with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Blue Raiders built on their lead in the second, when senior Kaleb King roped a leadoff double to right center field. Sophomore Blake Benefield followed with an RBI-single to left field, scoring King. Seniors Chaz Vesser and Delgado hit back-to-back singles of their own, putting MT up 3-0 after two innings.
Again in the fourth, the Blue Raiders lead off with a double. This time it was right fielder Phillip Kunsa smacking one down the right field line. Later in the inning, Vesser hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Kunsa.
MT lead 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Indiana struck in the fourth, when Jake Matheny hit a two-run single to left field.
The Blue Raiders lead 4-2, heading into the seventh before adding an insurance run to put the game away.
King finished 2-of-4 with a run, while Blake Benefield is starting to get his bat going, finishing 2-of-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1:05 p.m. Sophomore Carson Lester will get the start on the mound for MT.
The game will be audio streamed through CUSA.tv/RaiderVision. Radio coverage provided on 92. 3 FM (WMOT 2). Live tweets are available on Twitter @MT_Baseball.
